A recent article in the LA Times examines good and bad plastic surgery. While good cosmetic surgery can make you look young and fresh, there are also those who fall victim to bad cosmetic surgery.

Sure, some people will tout the virtues of self-acceptance and aging gracefully and lament that the rise of cosmetic procedures (including fillers, Botox and the like) signifies the swift decline of civilization. But in reality, as long as people see a benefit — be it in their work, personal or sex lives — from looking younger or correcting perceived flaws, plastic surgery will continue to be a solution. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 13,828,726 cosmetic procedures — including the minimally invasive as well as the surgical — were done in the U.S. last year. That's a 5% increase over 2010.

But sometimes plastic surgery doesn't make a person look younger or more beautiful (an arguably subjective word). It can instead just make the person look, well, weird. For instance, Olympic champion Bruce Jenner, patriarch of the Kardashian clan, famously had the results of a mid-1980s facelift corrected in 2009 after years of unkind commentary. Mickey Rourke Janice Dickenson, Dolly Parton, Priscilla Presley and, of course, Michael Jackson and Joan Rivers also represent extreme transformations.

How Many Years Will A Face Lift Shave Off?

If you're considering a facelift or other cosmetic surgery for a more youthful look, a new study may help you determine by just how many years the surgeon may reverse the clock. Turns out, it's less than you may think. The study, which was published online Monday in the journal Archive of Facial Plastic Surgery, was designed to help patients better understand what to expect before going under the knife. On average, patients trimmed back 7.2 years from their face, depending on how much work they had done.
According to the study, a facelift or necklift can wipe away 5.7 years, while those who get their eyelids done wipe away two years. Include a forehead lift in the mix and you can shave off a total of 8.4 years.

The goal of the study was to find an "objective measure" for patients by asking 40 medical students to guess the ages of cosmetic surgery patients, mostly women ages 45 to 72, in before-and-after photos.

There were 13.8 million cosmetic procedures done in 2011.  That number is expected to grow in 2012.

Meryl Streep....Still a Leading Lady-Has Plastic Surgery Played a Role in Her Career?

Meryl Streep, 62, has come a long way from feeling like her career was washed up at 40. But did she ever get any help from plastic surgery?  Or did she arrive naturally?

She speaks very candidly in this month’s Vogue magazine that when she turned 40: “I remember turning to my husband and saying, ‘Well, what should we do? Because it’s over.’ ”

Of course, it wasn’t. The story reels off her hits, starting with “The Bridges of Madison County” and continuing through the last 5 years: “The Devil wears Prada”, “Mamma mia!”, “Julie & Julia,” and “It’s Complicated”.

And now, “The Iron Lady”  in which she plays former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.  

While Streep’s career has thrived, the widely revered actress has publicly opposed plastic surgery.

“The good thing about getting older is that when they do cast you it’s often something interesting – you’re no longer asked to be the beautiful leading lady,” she’s been quoted as saying. She’s said she’s relished tackling the roles that give actors the chance to explore idiosyncrasies.

And she’s mastered those, as we’ve seen, with nary a droopy eyelid or a frozen forehead.

Streep reportedly has denied that she ever got cosmetic surgery. But not everyone believes that she’s never benefited from it.

The beauty/plastic surgery website Make Me Heal said a couple of years ago: 

“At nearly 60, Streep has a very taut neck, no jowls, and a flawless face that is virtual free of wrinkles, and refreshed eyes. In light of these youthful characteristics, it is believed that Streep underwent a face lift, neck lift, and quite likely an eyelid surgery.

“Additionally, Streep’s wrinkle-free appearance is likely to be aided by cosmetic procedures done over the years such as laser or chemical peels and the routine dermal injections such as Botox or Restylane.

“It is believed that Meryl Streep has had subtle procedures done all along her career …We think Meryl looks stunning and she should keep doing what she's doing....it obviously works for her!

Made by Kaeria ERUL, the program builds on the success of the Plastic Surgery Simulator used by customers and physicians when deciding on procedures. Moving to the mobile platform opens new doors for the company and potentially adds to the increasing number of plastic surgery patients, said Benjamin Melki, Kaeria chief executive. “With this app, users can distort their picture to see how they would look with a differently shaped nose, breasts, chin, buttocks, and so on,” he said. “Sometimes, just a slight modification makes a tremendous difference to one’s appearance. It can be shocking to see the before and after photos.”

Users can import photos from their library or memory stick and stretch, grow, shrink and brush body parts. Once finished, the new photos can be cropped and saved and shared via email or Facebook. The new images can also be shared through the company Website Befaft.com, where other users can view, comment and rate. The mobile Plastic Surgery Simulator works on iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touch devices using the iOS 4.3 operating system and Mac OS 10.6.6 systems. The program is available for $1.99 from the Apple App Store in the Photo and Video category.  As with the original program, users are not guaranteed specific results as it is used to help in the decision-making process. According to the company, 5 percent of Plastic Surgery Simulator users are doctors. Users also receive free access to the Befaft.com network.
