Listening to music calms patients during plastic surgery procedures

This article from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery examines how patients benefit from classical music during their cosmetic surgery procedure. Surgery can be stressful for the patient and music is really a way to help anxiety. If you are thinking of having plastic surgery, give us a call at 1-800-SLEEK-USA to schedule your free consultation. A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon will speak with you regarding your procedure and answer all of your questions. Sleek Surgical & MedSpa will make your surgery as anxiety free as possible. You will be so excited about your procedure that you will be completely worry free on surgery day!
A new study from Oxford University Hospitals finds that patients undergoing plastic surgery procedures may benefit from having music playing in the operating room.

Researchers from the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford measured the respiratory rates of 96 surgical patients before, during and after their procedures. They were also asked to rate their feelings of anxiety and worry. All of the participants were awake during surgery using local anesthetic for procedures like removal of skin lesions and cleansing of limb wounds. Half of the surgeries took place in rooms with music playing, while the others did not have music in the background.

The study found that those who listened to music during their procedure had lower respiratory rates and reported lower levels of anxiety.

"Undergoing surgery can be a stressful experience for patients and finding ways of making them more comfortable should be our goal as clinicians," said the study's lead author, Hazim Sadideen. "There are also good medical reasons - calmer patients may cope better with pain and recover quicker. This small scale work is the first time an attempt has been made to measure the impact music has in this specific group of patients and hints at the need for bigger multi-center research to establish whether this should become part of standard practice."

As for what type of music has the greatest calming effects, researchers say most of the subjects listened to classical pieces by Mozart, Beethoven, Vivaldi and Bach, according to The Telegraph. Others chose to listen to Frank Sinatra music.

This research may help patients have more enjoyable surgical experiences, as the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reports that more than 9 million people underwent cosmetic procedures in 2011, some of which were performed while patients were awake.

Did you know lipoplasty and eyelid surgery are the most popular surgical procedures for men?

An interesting article that discusses the rise of plastic surgery in males...To learn more about the below plastic surgery procedures, click on the links or check out Sleek Surgical & MedSpa. You can also give us a call at 1-800-SLEEK-USA to ask any questions and book a free consultation.

There was a time when men were allowed to age gracefully and CEOs had grey hair.  Now men are competing with 20-something entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg and trying to live up to the “six pack” ideal of male attractiveness and masculinity.
So, while women have been undergoing minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, such as Botox and Restylane, men have stepped up to the plate, choosing surgical options. In an effort to get rid of “love handles” and other abdominal fat, more than 41,000 men underwent lipoplasty in 2011, representing a 14 percent increase from the past year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), reporting to the Los Angeles Times.
The LA Times interviewed Stephen, an Orange County lipoplasty patient who typifies that trend. “I couldn’t get rid of the fat. I tried diets. I walked five days a week and worked out three, but it just accumulated and I couldn’t get rid of it.” Stephen was embarrassed to wear a T-shirt for five years because it showed his fatty abdomen and chest.

Eyelid Surgery in men is also on the rise. ASAPS reports that 23,000 eyelid surgeries were performed in men in 2011, representing a 6 percent increase over last year. A Beverly Hills plastic surgeons believes that eyelid and abdominal surgery are so popular “because the eyelids and midsection are among the first parts of the body to show signs of age and among the most difficult to remedy without surgery.”

A Utah plastic surgeon tells the LA Times that plastic surgery in men is becoming much more acceptable. In the past patients would hide for 8 weeks after surgery; “Now you have your surgery in the morning and in the afternoon you’re talking to your friends.”

Whether you’re male or female, a huge portion of the U.S. population is aging. This may be the largest factor in driving the male plastic surgery trend. According to the 2011 International Study of Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery Procedures, “people ages 35 to 64 account for 71 percent of all cosmetic procedures in the U.S., the country with the largest number of cosmetic procedures performed.”

The bottom line is that in 2011, 9 percent of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the U.S. were performed in men, representing a 121 percent increase since 1997.

Modern Etiquette: Let's talk about cosmetic surgery

Read this interesting article from Reuters regarding cosmetic surgery etiquette! To learn more about cosmetic surgery procedures visit us at www.sleekmedspa.com or call 1-800-SLEEK-USA. We are here to answer all of your questions and concerns :)
By Mary M. Mitchell

(Reuters) - Four generations coexist in today's workplace, each with a different set of perception glasses through which they see the world, their colleagues, their work, and themselves.

And generational differences aside, each individual has a different set of needs, a different set of motivations. There is, however, some commonality: everybody wants to be at their best, to feel good, to look good, and to perform well.

The Wall Street Journal reports, not surprisingly, that more Baby Boomers are having cosmetic surgery than ever before. A recent wire service story reported that image scanners are now looking into individuals' original appearance before cosmetic surgery to validate identification. This technology never would have been conceived were it not for the numbers of people who are changing their appearance.

When we change the way we look, it almost automatically changes the way others react to us. One would do well to adopt the approach of "mine not to reason why", to paraphrase Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

That requires setting some parameters.

"Plastic surgery takes on a polarizing effect like religion or politics. People have very strong opinions about it," commented Mary Lee Peters, a board-certified Seattle-based plastic surgeon.

Indeed they do.

Haven't we all been privy to snarky comments about people we claim "have had work done?"

"There is no getting around it and no denying it. It is foolish to pretend that comfort in one's body doesn't matter. The people most likely to deny it are mostly uncomfortable with their own appearance," continued Dr. Peters.

"Men are more reluctant to come up with reasons why they want to turn to cosmetic surgery. My observation is that men do it when either their economic status or their power structure is threatened."

With all due respect to Dr. Peters, my own experience is that, irrespective of gender, our dissatisfaction with our appearance ultimately impacts our perceptions of power structure and economic status. Yet, in terms of how we deal with others, does this really matter?

If you run into someone whose appearance is markedly different and you suspect cosmetic surgery, here are some suggestions for what you can do to keep the situation comfortable for all parties.

Cameron Diaz Shows off Her New and Improved Beautiful Face

Reports have been flooding the internet about Cameron Diaz, who was recently spotted at the Paris Fashion Shows looking quite different.  Several months ago, we noticed that her breasts were definitely larger, indicating she could have had a breast enhancement procedure, such as breast implants.  But now, it looks like the "Bad Teacher" star has made a trip back to her plastic surgeon receiving several treatments that have changed the look and feel of her face.

We asked our very own board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso, who is located in our Ft. Lauderdale location what his thoughts were.  "Firstly, Cameron's skin texture is smooth and very shiny, she could have had several different laser procedures done, such as laser skin resurfacing which can reduce facial wrinkles, scars and blemishes.  Also, we look at pictures of her from a few years back compared to today, it looks as though she has had some chemical fillers applied to her face, such as Radiesse, which upon injection, acts as a volumizing filler that immediately provides the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging.  She definitely has had Botox too, her forehead is very smooth and wrinkle free".

First her breasts and now her face? Since breaking up with baseball star Alex Rodriguez last year, Cameron Diaz seems to have gone out of her way to prove she is young, carefree and single!

Cameron will be turning 40 in August of this year, apparently she is already preparing by turning back the clock a few years.

It is not the first time that Diaz has had work done on her face. In 2006, she admitted to having a nose job but claimed it was for "medical purposes," after she broke it in a surfing accident.

Smart Lipo: Get the scoop on Smart Lipo effectiveness and safety, including smart lipo benefits and smart lipo complications

Smartlipo has been gaining a quite a bit of attention from important national media, such as USA Today, People Magazine and Good Morning America. That is probably attributed to its revolutionary technology.  A small tube is inserted into areas that have deposits of excess fat and a laser ruptures the fat cells. The body naturally expels the liquid within the cells and the laser energy stimulates collagen production to tighten skin into a new shape after the procedure. This article will further explain smart lipo effectiveness and safety and address common questions, including smart lipo complications and results.

Smartlipo vs. Liposuction

Liposuction loosens and sculpts fat with a cannula (a hollow tube inserted through the skin) and removed from the body immediately with vacuum suctioning. Smartlipo is less invasive because it is performed with local anesthetic and the small incision of the  laser’s tube does not require stitches or cause bruising.

For starters, the downtime and costs differ greatly between the two procedures. Smartlipo complications are minimal and it has a 2 day turnaround time  vs.  traditional liposuction which has a 2 week downtime. Smartlipo is also 30-50% less expensive that liposuction because it is an outpatient procedure.

What areas can be treated?

Smartlipo has been used to remove from fatty areas from the chin to the arms to the knees and everywhere in-between. It is ideally used as a method of spot reduction of excess fat.

How do I determine if I am a candidate for the procedure?

Because every person is different, we suggest you consult with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons for a personal consultation.  During you consultation, the doctor will assess your goals and needs and address smart lipo effectiveness and safety to recommend the right solution for you.

We are now performing Smartlipo at our New York location as part of our new SLEEK Surgical Center. If you would like to learn more, click here  or schedule a free consultation and get $100 off your procedure.
