Did you know lipoplasty and eyelid surgery are the most popular surgical procedures for men?

An interesting article that discusses the rise of plastic surgery in males...To learn more about the below plastic surgery procedures, click on the links or check out Sleek Surgical & MedSpa. You can also give us a call at 1-800-SLEEK-USA to ask any questions and book a free consultation.
April 23, 2012
There was a time when men were allowed to age gracefully and CEOs had grey hair.  Now men are competing with 20-something entrepreneurs like Mark Zuckerberg and trying to live up to the “six pack” ideal of male attractiveness and masculinity.
So, while women have been undergoing minimally invasive cosmetic treatments, such as Botox and Restylane, men have stepped up to the plate, choosing surgical options. In an effort to get rid of “love handles” and other abdominal fat, more than 41,000 men underwent lipoplasty in 2011, representing a 14 percent increase from the past year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), reporting to the Los Angeles Times.
The LA Times interviewed Stephen, an Orange County lipoplasty patient who typifies that trend. “I couldn’t get rid of the fat. I tried diets. I walked five days a week and worked out three, but it just accumulated and I couldn’t get rid of it.” Stephen was embarrassed to wear a T-shirt for five years because it showed his fatty abdomen and chest.

Eyelid Surgery in men is also on the rise. ASAPS reports that 23,000 eyelid surgeries were performed in men in 2011, representing a 6 percent increase over last year. A Beverly Hills plastic surgeons believes that eyelid and abdominal surgery are so popular “because the eyelids and midsection are among the first parts of the body to show signs of age and among the most difficult to remedy without surgery.”

A Utah plastic surgeon tells the LA Times that plastic surgery in men is becoming much more acceptable. In the past patients would hide for 8 weeks after surgery; “Now you have your surgery in the morning and in the afternoon you’re talking to your friends.”

Whether you’re male or female, a huge portion of the U.S. population is aging. This may be the largest factor in driving the male plastic surgery trend. According to the 2011 International Study of Aesthetic/Cosmetic Surgery Procedures, “people ages 35 to 64 account for 71 percent of all cosmetic procedures in the U.S., the country with the largest number of cosmetic procedures performed.”

The bottom line is that in 2011, 9 percent of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the U.S. were performed in men, representing a 121 percent increase since 1997.

More Men Go Under the Knife

A recent article from The Vancouver Sun examines how more men are getting plastic surgery to look better and gain confidence. Call us today at 1-800-SLEEK-USA for a consultation, or visit us at www.sleekmedspa.com if you too are interested in plastic surgery to gain confidence :)

When John Tlapa looked in the mirror, his nose looked like he "could pick a door lock," he said. It resembled "a hook with a point on it. It was pretty ugly."

So two years ago, the San Diego-based screenwriter underwent rhinoplasty to improve his profile and fix a deviated septum that had plagued him for almost 40 years.

Tlapa, 54, is part of a trend that, in recent years, has seen increasing numbers of men seeking cosmetic surgery. In 2011, 9 percent of surgical and nonsurgical cosmetic procedures in the U.S. were conducted on men, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery - a 121 percent increase since 1997.

While the number of cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the U.S. increased just 1 percent from 2010 to 2011, the number of males getting liposuction and eyelid surgeries is on the rise. More than 41,000 lipoplasty procedures and almost 23,000 eyelid surgeries were performed on men in 2011, increasing 14 percent and 6 percent, respectively.

Women in recent years have been trending toward minimally invasive cosmetic treatments such as Botox and Restalyne, but the fastest-growing cosmetic procedures for men are surgical. Liposuction tops the list of most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed on men, followed by rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, male breast reduction and face-lifts.

"The taboo is lifting for men," said Renato Saltz, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Park City, Utah, who is also vice president of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. "In the past few years, plastic surgery is everywhere. All those nip-and-tuck shows have brought plastic surgery to a common ground."

Modern Etiquette: Let's talk about cosmetic surgery

Read this interesting article from Reuters regarding cosmetic surgery etiquette! To learn more about cosmetic surgery procedures visit us at www.sleekmedspa.com or call 1-800-SLEEK-USA. We are here to answer all of your questions and concerns :)
By Mary M. Mitchell

(Reuters) - Four generations coexist in today's workplace, each with a different set of perception glasses through which they see the world, their colleagues, their work, and themselves.

And generational differences aside, each individual has a different set of needs, a different set of motivations. There is, however, some commonality: everybody wants to be at their best, to feel good, to look good, and to perform well.

The Wall Street Journal reports, not surprisingly, that more Baby Boomers are having cosmetic surgery than ever before. A recent wire service story reported that image scanners are now looking into individuals' original appearance before cosmetic surgery to validate identification. This technology never would have been conceived were it not for the numbers of people who are changing their appearance.

When we change the way we look, it almost automatically changes the way others react to us. One would do well to adopt the approach of "mine not to reason why", to paraphrase Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

That requires setting some parameters.

"Plastic surgery takes on a polarizing effect like religion or politics. People have very strong opinions about it," commented Mary Lee Peters, a board-certified Seattle-based plastic surgeon.

Indeed they do.

Haven't we all been privy to snarky comments about people we claim "have had work done?"

"There is no getting around it and no denying it. It is foolish to pretend that comfort in one's body doesn't matter. The people most likely to deny it are mostly uncomfortable with their own appearance," continued Dr. Peters.

"Men are more reluctant to come up with reasons why they want to turn to cosmetic surgery. My observation is that men do it when either their economic status or their power structure is threatened."

With all due respect to Dr. Peters, my own experience is that, irrespective of gender, our dissatisfaction with our appearance ultimately impacts our perceptions of power structure and economic status. Yet, in terms of how we deal with others, does this really matter?

If you run into someone whose appearance is markedly different and you suspect cosmetic surgery, here are some suggestions for what you can do to keep the situation comfortable for all parties.

Plastic surgery considered a health benefit in Brazil

A recent article from the ASAPS indicates that plastic surgery in Brazil is not only considered a right, but oftentimes free of charge or discounted. The idea of free plastic surgery to help with one's self esteem is really a great concept!
While plastic surgery is considered a luxury in America, in Brazil it's considered a right.
A recent Associated Press report in the Daily News revealed that thousands of the country's poor have undergone plastic surgery procedures such as Botox injections, laser hair removal, chemical peels and laser treatments free of charge.
According to the AP, more than 220 clinics throughout the country offer free or discounted plastic surgery to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford it. The reason - these procedures help boost self-esteem and enable patients to feel more confident about themselves.
"What's a wrinkle? Something minor, right? Something with precious little importance," a Rio de Janeiro-based plastic surgeon, told the AP. "But when we treat the wrinkle, that unimportant little thing, we're actually treating something very important: The patient's self esteem."
Dr. Ivo Pitanguy, the “philosopher of plastic surgery" in Brazil founded the first surgical center to treat the poor, mainly focusing on burn victims and those with deformities, but also offered discounted cosmetic surgery. Now, the growing numbers of hospitals and clinics that offer these services have long lines and waiting lists. Once a surgery is approved by a physician, patients might wait years to undergo their desired procedure.
And while the cosmetic procedures are beneficial to those undergoing them, it can also be argued that there's a benefit for the providers as well, as they allow young doctors to gain experience.
Brazil, a common destination for medical tourists seeking discounted plastic surgery procedures, is the world's top plastic surgery provider, with the United States coming in second place.
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), more than 9.1 million plastic surgery procedures were performed in the US in 2011. The most common cosmetic surgeries included liposuction, breast augmentation, tummy tucks, cosmetic eyelid surgery and breast lifts. The most common nonsurgical procedures included botulinum toxin type A injections, hyaluronic acid injections, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and laser treatments.

Good Plastic Surgery, Bad Plastic Surgery

A recent article in the LA Times examines good and bad plastic surgery. While good cosmetic surgery can make you look young and fresh, there are also those who fall victim to bad cosmetic surgery.

Sure, some people will tout the virtues of self-acceptance and aging gracefully and lament that the rise of cosmetic procedures (including fillers, Botox and the like) signifies the swift decline of civilization. But in reality, as long as people see a benefit — be it in their work, personal or sex lives — from looking younger or correcting perceived flaws, plastic surgery will continue to be a solution. According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 13,828,726 cosmetic procedures — including the minimally invasive as well as the surgical — were done in the U.S. last year. That's a 5% increase over 2010.

But sometimes plastic surgery doesn't make a person look younger or more beautiful (an arguably subjective word). It can instead just make the person look, well, weird. For instance, Olympic champion Bruce Jenner, patriarch of the Kardashian clan, famously had the results of a mid-1980s facelift corrected in 2009 after years of unkind commentary. Mickey Rourke Janice Dickenson, Dolly Parton, Priscilla Presley and, of course, Michael Jackson and Joan Rivers also represent extreme transformations.

Looking For Another Reason To Have Your Breast Augmentation Procedure??

A recent article from The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery indicates that breast implants are in development that can deter or detect breast cancer cells! Call Sleek Surgical & MedSpa today at 1-800-SLEEK-USA to schedule your free consultation or visit us on the web at Sleek Breast Enhancement to learn more about the procedure.

Researchers from two institutions, Brown University and the University of Akron are leading the way in developing breast implants that deter or even detect cancer cells.  These advancements might have a huge impact on women who have had breast cancer or those with a history of the disease in their family.

Biomedical scientists at Brown University have published results in the journal, Nanotechnology, documenting their creation of an implant with a microscopic "bed-of-nails" surface that prevents cancer cells from dwelling and thriving.

"It's a surface that's hospitable to healthy breast cells and less so for cancerous breast cells," said lead researcher, Thomas Webster. "This is like a bed-of-nails surface to them."

Webster and Lijuan Zhang, a chemistry graduate student, tested various types of raised surface implants and discovered that those with microscopic "pimples" measuring 23-nanometers each were most successful in helping healthy cells to grow. As a point of reference, a nanometer is 1/50,000th the width of a human hair. After just one day, this surface yielded 15 percent more healthy endothelial breast cells compared to a normal surface in tests. Researchers hope human trials using this technology will begin within five years.

Could an eye-lift cure chronic headaches? How migraine sufferers are turning to plastic surgery for relief

Extreme migraine sufferers are now turning to cosmetic surgery to cure their debilitating pain.

Through routine surgeries, such as an eyelid lift, doctors are able to have 'easy access' to the critical sensory nerves around eyes that can cause migraine pain, with patients also benefiting cosmetically.

After several patients reported their migraines improved after a forehead lift, U.S. plastic and reconstructive doctors have come up with a successful procedure combing pain relief with aesthetic enhancement.

When other women also cited migraine relief following Botox injections, Dr Bahman Guyuronthis, chairman of the plastic surgery department at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, told the Boston Globe: 'We put two and two together and designed a surgical procedure to help these patients.'

This nerve decompression procedure, an operation that relieves pressure on the nerves behind the eyes believed to cause migraine pain, was first developed 12 years ago by Dr Guyuronthis.

However a big challenge was having neurologists, who were skeptical about the otherwise cosmetic approach, to refer patients.

Of the over 36 million Americans afflicted with migraine, 27 million are women, according to the Migraine Research Foundation, and eventually some patients were willing to try the experimental procedure because of the added cosmetic benefits.

Unsure of the difference between Juvederm and Botox? Read the below to learn more!
Botox vs. Juvederm
While BOTOX® Cosmetic is still the top wrinkle treatment in the country, there are many other dermal injectables such as Juvederm™ that are also effective at treating fine lines, wrinkles, crows feet, frown lines, acne scars, forehead creases, dark under eye circles, not to mention plumping lips and rejuvenating skin. The fact that both are proven injectable treatments leads some patients to ask, what's the difference between the two?
First off, the main difference between Botox and Juvederm is in the injections' solutions themselves. Juvederm is a dermal filler that uses a hyaluronic acid-based gel to literally "fill in" wrinkles and rejuvenate aging skin. Botox, on the other hand, is an injection that uses a refined solution of botulinum toxin type A. This toxin, also known as a neuromuscular blocking toxin, eliminates the appearance of wrinkles by blocking the chemical that triggers muscle responses, acetylcholine. This creates a temporary paralysis of muscles at the injection site, thus smoothing skin in the forehead and around the eyes for a more youthful appearance. By comparison, Juvederm's filler solution plumps weak or deteriorating skin tissues to temporarily compensate for reduced collagen levels and loss of skin elasticity.
Botox and Juvederm are both used to rejuvenate the appearance of aging skin; however, Juvederm and other dermal fillers can also be used for lip augmentation and to correct fat loss in the face, whereas BOTOX® Cosmetic is strictly a wrinkle treatment. Outside the realm of aesthetic enhancement, Botox injections can be used to treat an assortment of medical conditions like migraine headaches and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Juvederm injections are used solely for cosmetic enhancement.
Like Botox, Juvederm has been FDA approved to treat wrinkles for cosmetic patients. Its naturally occurring, hyaluronic acid gel means that Juvederm poses virtually no risk of allergic reaction, and is a very safe filler option with minimal side effects. Juvederm's formula also provides long-term effectiveness, with results lasting anywhere from 6-9 months, or even up to 12 months.
