Unsure of the difference between Juvederm and Botox? Read the below to learn more!
Botox vs. Juvederm
While BOTOX® Cosmetic is still the top wrinkle treatment in the country, there are many other dermal injectables such as Juvederm™ that are also effective at treating fine lines, wrinkles, crows feet, frown lines, acne scars, forehead creases, dark under eye circles, not to mention plumping lips and rejuvenating skin. The fact that both are proven injectable treatments leads some patients to ask, what's the difference between the two?
First off, the main difference between Botox and Juvederm is in the injections' solutions themselves. Juvederm is a dermal filler that uses a hyaluronic acid-based gel to literally "fill in" wrinkles and rejuvenate aging skin. Botox, on the other hand, is an injection that uses a refined solution of botulinum toxin type A. This toxin, also known as a neuromuscular blocking toxin, eliminates the appearance of wrinkles by blocking the chemical that triggers muscle responses, acetylcholine. This creates a temporary paralysis of muscles at the injection site, thus smoothing skin in the forehead and around the eyes for a more youthful appearance. By comparison, Juvederm's filler solution plumps weak or deteriorating skin tissues to temporarily compensate for reduced collagen levels and loss of skin elasticity.
Botox and Juvederm are both used to rejuvenate the appearance of aging skin; however, Juvederm and other dermal fillers can also be used for lip augmentation and to correct fat loss in the face, whereas BOTOX® Cosmetic is strictly a wrinkle treatment. Outside the realm of aesthetic enhancement, Botox injections can be used to treat an assortment of medical conditions like migraine headaches and excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). Juvederm injections are used solely for cosmetic enhancement.
Like Botox, Juvederm has been FDA approved to treat wrinkles for cosmetic patients. Its naturally occurring, hyaluronic acid gel means that Juvederm poses virtually no risk of allergic reaction, and is a very safe filler option with minimal side effects. Juvederm's formula also provides long-term effectiveness, with results lasting anywhere from 6-9 months, or even up to 12 months.
